WEGE COMPANY is a pioneering social enterprise dedicated to accelerating the green economy through innovative circular economy practices. The company transforms abundant agricultural byproducts specifically banana pseudo-stems, paper waste, and rice straw waste into highly affordable, reusable, recyclable, and 100% eco-friendly packaging solutions designed to entirely replace single-use plastics.

Although officially launched in April 2021, the conceptual framework for WEGE COMPANY began in 2018. This was a pivotal year when the Government of Burundi promulgated Decree No. 100/009,  which strictly prohibited the import, manufacture, commercialization, and structural use of  single-use plastic   across the national territory. Prior to this regulatory milestone, widespread plastic overuse had pushed local ecosystems into an alarming state of environmental degradation and heightened climate vulnerability.

This historic decree presented a severe operational challenge for Burundian citizens, commercial retail networks, and staple food industries (such as those distributing beans, rice, and flour), as the market at that time offered no viable, scalable packaging alternatives or substitutes.

Amidst this country-wide logistical uncertainty, WEGE COMPANY   developed the NDIHOSE PACKAGE a high-durability, eco-friendly packaging crafted from processed agricultural waste. This proprietary innovation solves many structural challenges simultaneously: it preserves critical terrestrial ecosystems, actively driving job creation for youth and women, while  empowering smallholder farmers in underserved communities. These fully biodegradable packaging units serve as a direct market substitute for polythene plastics, which systematically pollute the environment and devastate marine biodiversity (Life Below Water).

Our robust, localized raw material pipeline relies on deep grassroots partnerships. We collect discarded banana trunks and structural rice straw directly from local smallholder farmers post-harvest, while sourcing uncontaminated paper waste from regional printing firms and municipal waste management entities. Through our specialized clean manufacturing process, these raw fibers are upcycled into commercial-grade eco-packaging that naturally composts within a single week of disposal.

WEGE COMPANY aims to completely phase out the dependency on toxic plastic packaging materials, which accelerate climate change, trigger livestock deaths, and cause severe environmental deterioration. Beyond delivering high-performance green alternatives, our operational footprint directly enhances the economic value of Burundi’s agricultural sector, turning farming liabilities into sustainable raw assets.
